On Monday, August 21st, we experienced the Great American Solar Eclipse 2017. While here, just north of Chicago, we didn’t experience totality, and the peak of the event was marred by cloud cover, I was privileged to be part of an event that eclipsed the eclipse for my family. That event was the proposal/engagement of my cousin Rachel and her man, Jason. Through months of planning and scheming, we (Jason) managed to pull of the surprise at the eclipse viewing party at Rachel’s school, where she is an Assistant Principal. Here are a few moments from that afternoon. Click on any image to embiggen.

FAQ

Are you available on weekends?
Yes, I’m available on both Saturdays and Sundays. I am also available during the week.

Where do the mini sessions take place?
I have a variety of outdoor locations that will make a perfect setting for your photos. When you contact me to book your mini session, we will discuss what location works best for you.

If I choose the digital option, can I print photos anywhere I’d like?
Yes. Along with your digital files on a CD, you will receive a print release form. The files you will receive may be printed up to size 5×7 at a lab of your choosing (Walgreens, Sam’s Club, Costco, etc.).

What file format are the digital images?
The digital images are in JPEG (JPG) format.
Can I use the digital files to print my own holiday cards?
Absolutely!

If I choose to receive 50 cards, but need more than that, can I order more?
Of course.

How many people can I have in my photos?
The mini sessions are set up for your immediate family of up to 6 people. Is your family larger than that? Just call me and we can discuss options.

I have another question not addressed here. How can I get more information?

You may or may not know that I’m a part of an online community called Capture Your 365 (well, if you didn’t know before, you do now). It’s all about improving photography skills, with a focus on Project 365 – the practice of taking a photo a day, every day. It’s a pretty big commitment to do so, and I’m nearing the end of my third Project 365. Perhaps the toughest aspect of such a project is coming up with photo ideas. To aid in this task, Katrina Kennedy (founder of CY365) and her Creative Team provide community members with a monthly prompt list. My first year, I rarely followed the prompts. My second year, I followed every prompt, though sometimes out of order. This year, I’m following them sometimes – when they fit my day. But, I am making sure to capture one prompt in particular each month – the self portrait prompt. It’s been eye opening, for sure. I’ve become more comfortable and confident in front of the camera, which is so important when I’m trying to make you feel comfortable and confident from behind the camera.

Today’s CY365 self-portrait prompt is titled Challenges. My initial plan was that today’s selfie would be a sneak peek of our family holiday card portrait. Those plans went awry when I lost out to the biggest challenge of all – my daughter and her mega tantrum over having nothing to wear for the shoot (despite my numerous suggestions). By the time she’d calmed down, it was pitch dark outside. It’s kind of frustrating (to say the least) when the photographer’s own daughter entirely refuses to cooperate. Well, I was not about to let my glamorous eye makeup efforts go to waste. I do believe I have myself a new profile pic.
